Thiruvananthapuram: Police in Kerala are searching for a lead to unravel Sunday night's murder in Kottaym of a businessman and his wife hailing from Orissa state.

The incident comes on the heels of the state kicking off the novel community policing project in which local residents join hands with the police to ensure better policing.

V. Sreedhar (55) and his wife Swaran Lakshmi were found murdered in their rented house at Nagampadam in Kottayam.

Both hailed from Orissa and they were running a rubber mat business in Kottayam for more than two years.

According to reports, they had only recently returned to Kottayam after a visit to their native place.

The murder came to light only when calls to Sreedhar's mobile phone by his friends went unanswered.

Sreedhar was found naked and strangulated, with his hands tied behind his back. There were injuries on different parts of his body. His wife's body was found with a sari covering her mouth.

The couple is suspected to have been murdered in their bedroom and the bodies later dragged to the kitchen.

Sreedhar had been a regular visitor to the local club and it is his friends from the club who stumbled upon the murder when they attempted to contact him.

There are unconfirmed reports of the arrest of two persons connected with the incident, including one in Andhra Pradesh where Sreedhar and his wife had some contacts. Police are learnt to have got some telephone numbers from Sreedhar's house.
