New Delhi: Backing the Other Backward Class (OBC) quota, Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said the government wanted to provide equal opportunities to all sections of society.

Speaking at the Indo-Arab Investment Conclave in New Delhi on Friday, he said: "Whatever the Supreme Court has suggested, we will try to implement it and, thereafter, as far as the creamy layer is concerned, the government's perception is quite clear.

"When we amended the constitution, we wanted to make a distinction between opportunities for higher education and for jobs. The creamy layer concept was to facilitate reservation in jobs. Opportunities should be opened to all OBCs, including the creamy layer. The supreme court's judgment is binding."

The government has decided to go by the Supreme Court's order on 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions.
