Jammu: At least 14 people were killed and 27 injured when a bus veered off a mountainous road and crashed into a gorge in Indian Kashmir on Monday, police said.

The bus was transporting about 45 people to Srinagar. The driver lost control near Banihal, about 180 kilometres east of Jammu, police said.

A senior police officer said the cause of the accident was unknown but investigations were underway.

Poor maintenance of roads has claimed the lives of hundreds of people in the Himalayan region.
