Mumbai: The Bombay High Court yesterday gave 24 hours to the Maharashtra government to withdraw a circular which created confusion over medical postgraduate (PG) seats and put the fate of 242 doctors at stake.
After hearing the petitioners - the People's Health Organisation (PHO) that filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for an increase in medical postgraduate seats - the court chided the government for issuing a circular on April 4, 2008 that put doctors in a quandary since the last date of admissions was May 31, 2008.
The PIL was filed through PHO's secretary Dr I.S. Gilada and Dr Trupti Gilada on the irrational and consistent reduction in medical PG seats in several specialities of state-run medical colleges in the last decade by 78 per cent from 1906 seats in 2001 to 411 now.
The court observed that it was not necessary to issue such a letter as there were no directions from any court.
