Mumbai: Resident doctors who went on a strike in April this year to protest against the reduction in number of medical postgraduate seats are an elated lot with the Bombay High Court ordering the Maharashtra Government to start the admissions for an additional 214 seats.
A division bench of Justices S.C. Dharmadhikari and S.S. Shinde, that came down heavily on the state government for issuing a circular last month to halt admissions to 242 PG seats, passed an order on Wednesday to withdraw the letter and carry on with the admission process, the last date for admissions being May 31.
The court had given the state government to file an affidavit within 24 hours on Tuesday. According to the affidavit submitted to the court, the admissions allowed are for 113 seats for degree and 81 diploma PG courses which are in the process of being recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
In addition there were 20 more seats that were cleared by the MCI.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an NGO, the People's Health Organisation, brought the court's attention to the consistent and irrational reduction in medical PG seats in several specialities of state-run medical colleges.
The PIL urged the court to direct the state government to allow admissions on the 242 seats in courses recognised by the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC).
