Bangalore: A 30-member ministry headed by B.S. Yeddyurappa on Friday took office in Karnataka, marking the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in south India.
Yeddyurappa, 65, took oath of office in Kannada, watched by a galaxy of BJP leaders, chief ministers of National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled states and tens of thousands of cheering supporters.
State Governor Rameshwar Thakur administered the oath to Yeddyurappa and 29 others in the secretariat building in the heart of Bangalore.
Yeddyurappa said his government would seek a trust vote on June 6. The newly elected assembly would meet from June 4-6, he told reporters after the first meeting of his cabinet. The government would not take any major policy decision before the trust vote, he said.
"My government is determined to implement in a phased manner all the promises made in the election manifesto," he said.
The manifesto promises, among other things, free power to farmers and loans to farmers at an interest rate of 3 per cent per annum.
The first day of the legislature session will be devoted to the swearing-in of the 224 members. The new speaker will be elected the next day and the trust vote will be sought on the last day, according to the schedule drawn up by the cabinet.
