Bangkok: Shah Rukh Khan starrer "Chak De India" swept the IIFA awards on Sunday night, winning honours for best film, director and actor.
The movie about India’s women field hockey team and their coach struck a chord with audiences worldwide last year, cashing in at the box office and creating a furore of national pride.
“Chak De” screenwriter Jaideep Sahni grabbed the award for best story and director Shimit Amin and star Shah Rukh Khan also won in their respective categories.
Kareena Kapoor won the award for the best performance by a female in a leading role for her work as a bubbly young girl experiencing life and love in “Jab We Met”.
The IIFA’s star-studded award ceremony also saw Viviek Oberoi win for best performance in a negative role for his work in “Shootout at Lokhandwala”.
Hot celebrity couple Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, also won statues for best debut roles for their performances in "Saawariya" and "Om Shanti Om."
A host of movies that broke away from the mould of sing-song, colourful films were honoured at the ceremony.
But high-profile musical performances were the highlight of the show, with stars Dia Mirza, Akshay Kumar, and a lot more dazzling audiences.
Six hundred million television viewers took in the show at home, but few attended the event in Thailand.
Dedicated fans did turn out to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars as they glided down the green carpet late on Sunday.
