Thiruvananthapuram: At least three recent murders by people of victims' close family have shocked Kerala.
A man was beaten to death allegedly by his brother-in-law, while a youth reportedly stabbed to death his father. In another incident, a school boy was allegedly drowned in a river by his paternal uncle, who coveted his gold chain. Akshay (11), a student of the Holy Infant School in Varappuzha in Ernakulam district was reportedly killed by Alex's brother Manuel. The incident happened on May 31 and police unravelled the mystery on Tuesday.
According to the police, when Akshay went to Manuel's house that afternoon, Manuel managed to get his own children out of the way and lured Akshay to the river for a bath. After getting the boy into the river, Manuel used force to drown him and stole the gold chain the boy was wearing, they said. He then pledged the chain for Rs6,500 (Dh540) and reportedly consumed liquor with a part of the money.
Manuel was with Alex's family when they were searching for the boy and also when the body was later taken for autopsy.
In another incident, Dileep, son of Balan Pillai (54) of Ranni in Pathanamthitta district, was arrested by police over the latter's murder. Dileep is accused of having stabbed his father to death.
Police are searching for Puthenveettil Monachan (41) of Kottarakkara for the killing of his brother-in-law Kanjiramvila Veettil John (54).
Monachan reportedly hit John with a wooden plank, which proved fatal, following an altercation.
