Chennai: Thousands of crazed fans of Tamil actor Kamal Haasan started off delirious celebrations in Chennai as his movie Dasavathaaram, reputedly the costliest film ever to be made in India, opened in over 100 theatres.

Music of all varieties - folk, traditional and western - were played at once amid the cacophony of firecrackers as Chennai appeared to have come under the spell of the actor.

The new film has Kamal playing 10 different roles ranging from a scientist to a terrorist. The city has been plastered with the movie's posters over the past few weeks and Tamil television channels too have been promoting it in a big way.

At the heart of the story is a computer chip that goes missing from a US laboratory - and has to be tracked down.

In one part of the city, hundreds of fans sporting tattoos of their hero burnt blobs of camphor on their palms, unmindful of the searing pain.

The first images of the actor on the screen were greeted with confetti and loose change.

"This kind of fanatic endorsement of a 54-year-old star's eternal youth is simply uncalled for," said a disgusted K. Karuppusamy, who however identified himself as an admirer of the screen idol's acting.

A young fan, who identified himself as Asim, said: "After a long time, Kamal Haasan has satisfied his fans... He is the USP of the film. I loved watching him."

While reviewers had to wait for the third show of the day to give their verdict, fans pouring out of cinemas proclaimed it a "smash hit".
