Mumbai: Eleven people were injured, two of them critically, when a drunken motorist lost control of his car and hit three autorickshaws parked on the road before ploughing into pedestrians in suburban Malad on Sunday evening.

Police arrested Sunil Shah and booked him for driving under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on Sunday at around 11 pm.

Shah has been remanded to judicial custody till Friday. The injured were admitted to the Bhagwati and Hinduja Hospitals.

The five young occupants of the car were all allegedly drunk. They were apparently going from Kandivli to Malad and were being chased by the traffic police when they hit the parked vehicles and then veered into people standing by the roadside.

In a similar case, a car slammed into two stationary taxis near the Tardeo bridge in south central Mumbai in the wee hours yesterday. Police said the driver, D. Ajit, who sustained minor injuries, was under the influence of alcohol.

The ongoing drive by the city traffic police to deter drunken driving has failed to show desired results. From January 1 till June 13 this year, police action under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for drunken driving saw 3,358 drivers being punished with simple imprisonment as against 2,623 in 2007.

Driving licences of 3,750 drunken drivers were suspended during this period as against 2,798 last year. The six-month period also saw 84 drivers being sent to jail for dangerous driving.

Special drives conducted by the traffic police saw 7,051 cases being registered for drunk driving, 1,105 for dangerous driving, 6,446 for driving without wearing seat belts and 1,501 for driving without using tail lights.
