Thiruvananthapuram: There seems to be no end to the mystery surrounding the death of a nun in a Kerala convent 16 years ago, with a court on Monday expressing doubts about the manner in which the investigation has proceeded.
In latest developments, the Kerala High Court has expressed unhappiness at the manner of the conduct of narco analysis tests on two priests and a nun in connection with the death of Sister Abhaya, who was found dead at the Pius X Convent in Kottayam in 1992.
The case is currently being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, but the central agency has not quite won the court's appreciation. Following the court's directive, the CBI had submitted to the court a compact disc containing data of the narco analysis.
Investigation
After examining the CD, Justice V. Ramkumar has said that it raises doubts about the narco tests, and stated that the official who conducted the tests was not adequately conversant with Malayalam.
The case was initially probed by the local police and the state crime branch and it was only much later that the CBI was entrusted with the case. The CBI's said evidence may have been destroyed during previous investigations and that it is difficult to determine the culprits. The case had at different stages almost looked like a wild goose chase, but persistent efforts by social activist Joemon Puthenpurackal, breathed new life into the case. He had been the one who demanded a fresh probe by the CBI after earlier probes had failed to determine the culprits.
