Srinagar: Thousands of people massed in the Indian Kashmir on Saturday to protest the death of 22 people killed in police firing during demonstrations in the region.

Many demonstrators hoisted black flags as a symbol of murning for the 22 killed in street battles earlier this week. Police did not disrupt the event.

Veteran separatist leader Sheikh Abdul Aziz was among those who died. Demonstrators gathered at his hometown of Pampore on Saturday.

Aziz was a former militant who had renounced violence and joined Indian Kashmir's political separatist alliance to seek the region's independence.

The unrest was triggered by a Kashmir government move in June to donate land to a Hindu shrine trust.

The decision was later reversed, angering Hindus who dominate the south of Jammu and Kashmir state.
