Lucknow: Two Dalit women have been forced to give birth outside a community health centre here, even after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court pulled up authorities in a similar case this week.

Meena Devi, 23, and Sheela Rawat, 28, gave birth outside a community health centre (CHC) in Nagram locality Wednesday night. Their family members said the CHC was found locked when they arrived there.

As the women started having labour pains, their family members along with some accredited social health activist (ASHA) workers prepared a makeshift delivery room by hanging bedsheets around where the two gave birth, the family members said.

It was only after protests by Nagram residents that two doctors arrived about an hour later and admitted the two women and soon thereafter discharged them, the family members said.

Lucknow chief medical officer A.K. Shukla said an inquiry was ordered in the case and refused to comment further.

The Lucknow bench of the high court Tuesday had reprimanded the state health authorities after Sarvesh Kumari gave birth outside a hospital.
