Jakarta: A powerful 6.2-magnitude earthquake rocked the Indonesian province of Aceh on Sunday morning but there were no reports of casualties or damage, a meteorological agency official said.

The quake struck at 00:30 Jakarta time in the northwest Aceh province, the official said.

The intensity of the quake was felt at 4 to 5 MMI in the town and the Semeleu island, she said.

A military officer said that the quake was "strong but short and only caused panic".

"So far, there is no building collapsed or casualty. The quake only triggered panic, people fled their homes, but now most of them had already returned homes," he told the Xinhua News.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.

The earthquake-triggered Asian tsunami in December 2004 killed some 168,000 people in Aceh, which is located at the northern tip of Sumatra.

Indonesia was the nation worst hit by the tsunami.
