Jakarta: The popularity of former Indonesian president Suharto's political vehicle, Golkar, which has dominated politics in the Southeast Asian country for decades, has slumped, a new survey shows.

The survey by private pollster Indo Barometer conducted last month also showed former president Megawati Sukarnoputri's party, the main opposition in the country, has widened its lead over Golkar ahead of next year's election. According to the survey, only 12 per cent of 1,200 respondents backed Golkar, a sharp plunge from 18 per cent in the last poll in December, 2007.
