Rome: Voting has begun in Italy's general elections that could bring conservative billionaire Silvio Berlusconi back to power.

The main opponent of the 71-year-old Berlusconi is Walter Veltroni of the center-left Democratic Party. The 52-year-old Veltroni is a former mayor of Rome.

Analysts say the leadership race will be close, with the winner likely to broker a deal with the smaller parties.

Voting across Italy lasts until 2000 GMT on Sunday and will resume on Monday until early afternoon.
