Brindisi: Pope Benedict on Sunday renewed his "message of peace" to the Middle East.
The pope is on a two-day pastoral visit to Italy's Puglia region. "I would like to renew the Christian message of cooperation and peace among all people, especially among...those of the Near and Middle East," he told thousands gathered in the southeastern Italian port city of Brindisi.
Quoting from his own speech to the United Nations in April, the pope also reiterated his call for conflict resolution "by exploring any possible diplomatic way."
An estimated 70,000 faithful attended the pope's open-air Mass and his Angelus prayer on Sunday. Later on Sunday, he meets with local clergy before returning to the Vatican.
