Tokyo: The death toll in the 7.2-magnitude earthquake which hit Japan on Saturday rose to 10 on Monday, as rescue workers continued to search for survivors.
Rescue workers recovered a fourth body from the debris of an inn in Miyagi, a local official said.
Twelve people are still missing, and at least 231 have been injured, Tokyo’s disaster agency said.
The quake, which occurred in a mountainous region of Japan, triggered several landslides that cut off roads leading to the affected areas.
However, casualties have been limited as the area is sparsely populated.
Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda urged officials to get essential services working quickly.
"I want basic services to be restored as soon as possible so that the lives of those who went through the quake can be stabilised," Kyodo news agency quoted him as telling a cabinet meeting on Monday.
