Tokyo: Twelve people have been arrested in Japan after posting threats to commit mass murder on the internet, Kyodo news agency said on Tuesday.
Police began tightening website surveillance for such posts soon after a Japanese man killed seven people in a stabbing spree in a busy shopping district.
The culprit in the case reportedly posted repeated warnings of his crime on a website, raising questions whether it could have been prevented.
"I will commit a massacre that will go down in history," Kyodo quoted one of the postings on an Internet bulletin board as saying. Legal steps were also taken against another five people, Kyodo added.
"Police have no choice but to take action," Kyodo quoted National Public Safety Commission Chairman Shinya Izumi as saying. "Otherwise, they will fail to protect what should be protected."
