Nairobi: Kenyan police tear gassed around 100 protesters, including a Nobel prize winner, who were demonstrating in the capital on Tuesday against proposals to increase the number of Cabinet posts.
Politicians, who have agreed to share power to calm a deadly election dispute, have proposed increasing the size of the Cabinet to meet the ambitions of rival parties.
Members of the ruling party and opposition have been squabbling over posts since a peace deal was signed last month to end weeks of violence that had killed more than 1,000 people.
The opposition has proposed expanding the current Cabinet of 17 to 34, while the government is pushing for 44. Previous cabinets have had over 30 ministers, but done little to alleviate the poverty forcing millions of Kenyans to scrape by on less than a dollar a day.
The protesters say Kenya cannot afford the civil servants needed to support new ministers, who are paid on a par with European colleagues.
