Tokyo: North Korea will not be removed from a terrorist list on Monday, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice assured Japan.
Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura told reporters Rice had informed him of the delay in a telephone conversation.
The move will likely be welcomed by Japan, which is involved in a feud over citizens abducted by North Korea years ago.
Japan and North Korea began two days of talks over this issue in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang on Monday.
Washington promised to remove North Korea from the list of terrorism-sponsoring states if it were convinced by a verification plan for the nation’s nuclear programmes.
Removal from the list would relax US sanctions on Pyongyang, which Japan has said would lessen US pressure to resolve the abduction dispute.
