Kuala Lumpur: Former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has quit the United Malays National Organisation, media reported him saying on Monday.
Malaysia’s The Star newspaper reported the announcement but gave no details of the move, which looks certain to harm the ruling government.
Mahathir’s resignation comes just three days after the government ordered an investigation into the appointment of judges while he was in power.
Analysts have said Mahathir was upset over the allegations, adding that his departure would weaken the current government.
Mahathir ruled the country for 22 years until 2003, before appointing Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as his successor.
