Mexico City: Sixteen people, including a police chief have been killed in a series of drug gang related shootouts in Mexico.

One of the worst incidents happened in the town of Culiacan when nine people were killed at a car repair centre, with three of the victims police officers who had rushed to the scene.

Another officer was killed at the wheel of his truck in the same town, while yet another was shot and injured.

In the state of Chihuahua, a state police chief was dragged out of his house and executed and four more men were killed in Guadalupe, Calvo.

As many as 450 police officers have been killed in Mexico since the launch of a massive federal anti-drugs operation in December 2006.
