Maputo: At least eight people were killed and thousands of homes were destroyed as tropical cyclone Jokwe rocked parts of Mozambique for a third day, Radio Mozambique reported.

Thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes as the cyclone has wrecked over 20,000 homes, destroyed electricity pylons and uprooted trees.

Emergency workers said the cyclone was progressing towards the south and warned that the death toll will increase.

The government controlled radio said four districts were experiencing heavy downpours and strong winds.

The director of Mozambique's National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) said Cyclone Jokwe was more dangerous than the cyclone which hit Mozambique last year, adding that more floods could be expected as the cyclone headed inland.
