Katmandu: Nepal's central bank governor has been convicted of corruption, fined and fired from his job, a supreme court official said on Wednesday.

Bijaya Nath Bhattarai was found guilty by the supreme of embezzling money while granting contracts to foreign consultants hired to make managerial reforms at Nepal Rastriya Bank, court official Til Prasad Shrestha said.

Bhattarai and another bank official, Surendra Man Pradhan, were each fined US$51,500. They were both fired, but will not be jailed.

According to the charges, filed in June 2007,  payments were made to the consultants, but they never traveled to Nepal.

Under Nepalese law, the bank officials have 35 days to file an appeal with the supreme court.
