Kathmandu: Nepal's former communist rebels have won the most seats in the country's new governing assembly, taking more than double the number of their nearest rival, an election official said on Thursday.
Thursday s preliminary results show the Maoists have won a total of 217 seats.
The Maoists will now form the foundation of Nepal's new government and bring in a wave of reformations to the impoverished Himalayan nation, despite not having absolute majority in the 601-seat Constituent Assembly.
One of the most likely changes is the end of Nepal's 239-year-old monarchy, which most major parties have called for repeatedly.
The Maoists have stressed that they have no plans to make Nepal a communist state and have said that they are committed capitalists.
