Lagos: Militants in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta on Wednesday threatened to attack major oil pipelines in the next 30 days to prove the government had not paid them to end the campaign.
The head of the state-run oil firm NNPC said the company paid militant groups $12 million to suspend attacks and protect facilities including the Chanomi creek pipeline in Delta state, reports in Nigerian newspapers said on Wednesday.
However, in an emailed statement, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) discounted this, saying: "To prove that we are not a part of this deal, the Chanomi creek pipeline and other major pipelines will be destroyed within the next 30 days."
