Islamabad: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), set to lead the upcoming new coalition government in the country, has said the remarks of its leader Asif Ali Zardari about Kashmir in an interview to an Indian channel had been misquoted out of context.
PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the party was committed to the resolution of the Kashmir dispute and normalisation of ties with India on the basis of respect and honour.
He said that in the interview Zardari while articulating the party's position had stated that the PPP believed in the solution of conflicts and simultaneously creating a trading block with the nations to improve living conditions of the people of south Asia.
Zardari had clarified that the PPP at the same time considered enhancing confidence a key to resolving outstanding issues, the spokesman said.
Enduring peace demands that south Asia should move forward with the support and blessings of the representatives of the people, Babar said.
The PPP believed that peace required patience, and confidence-building measures were required to create a climate for durable and peaceful relations, he said, adding that the party sees the people of Kashmir as key to a final settlement of the Kashmir issue.
