Islamabad: The mortal remains of a man who lost his passport while in India to watch a bilateral cricket series in 2005 and was subsequently imprisoned on suspicion of being a spy were buried on Tuesday, a day after his body was sent home from India, his brother said.
Khalid Mahmood, 30, died in an Indian prison on February 12 but his family in Pakistan was only informed of his death on March 4, said his brother, Fateh Mohammad Sadiq.
"Without a passport, he could not return and was arrested months later after his relatives in India, fearful that he did not have a passport, refused to shelter him," Sadiq said alleging that Mahmood's body showed signs of torture.
A Foreign Office spokesman said New Delhi had never informed Islamabad about Mahmood's arrest until his death and had also not made clear the cause of death.
