Jamrud: At least 70 people have been wounded in Pakistan after suspected militants destroyed 36 oil tankers supplying fuel to foreign forces in Afghanistan, officials said on Monday.
A fire started when the militants set off two bombs on Sunday night, causing some of the 100 tankers stationed near the Afghan-Pakistan border to explode.
A senior official reported 60 to 70 people were wounded in the attack that took place at the main crossing point west of the Khyber Pass.
Local government official Muhammad Iqbal Khan said the blasts were from two bombs planted in a parking lot on the Pakistani side of the border, adding that nine people have been detained for questioning.
One witness described “huge flames” that caused people to panic as the fire started to spread.
Although no one has claimed responsibility for the incident, officials suspect militants were behind it.
This is the second attack on Afghan-bound oil tankers in two weeks.
