Peshawar: Militants in Pakistan have been ordered to stop attacks by their commander following the initiation of “secret” peace talks with the government, an official said on Thursday.
Pakistan’s newly elected government has promised to pursue talks in an attempt to cede surging militant violence which has claimed hundreds of lives since mid-2007.
A peace accord was drafted by the government on Wednesday which calls for an end to armed conflict between the militants and government.
Not everyone has supported the forthcoming peace pact with the Al Qaida linked militants stationed along the border with Afghanistan.
Critics have raised concern that the deal will only give militants the opportunity to intensify their attacks.
