Islamabad:  Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) president Shahbaz Sharif will be elected chief minister of Punjab by the provincial assembly early next week, party sources said on Wednesday.

A session of the Punjab assembly will be held tomorrow in Lahore and will witness Shahbaz, the younger brother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, taking the oath as a member following his unopposed election to the provincial legislature.

The sources said the incumbent PML-N chief minister Dost Mohammad Khosa and his cabinet would resign to clear the decks for Shahbaz's election as the chief minister, which is likely on Monday.

According to the sources, the members of the current provincial cabinet would be sidelined in the new dispensation once Shahbaz Sharif becomes the chief minister, although additional ministers were likely to be appointed.

PPP support

The Pakistan Peoples Party, the partner in the new PML-N-headed pro-vincial government, has welcomed the election of Shahbaz to the Punjab assembly and expressed its support for him to lead the provincial government.
