Islamabad: The party of former premier Nawaz Sharif says it could not wait indefinitely for the reinstatement of the deposed judges by the coalition government.

Ahsan Iqbal, information secretary of Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), said in a statement yesterday that the party wanted resolution of the judges' issue in four to six weeks.

He said the PML-N was keen to keep the ruling coalition intact but it was becoming increasingly difficult for it to continue support to the government without the judges' reinstatement.

Iqbal said the party was under pressure to take a clear stand on the issue and an important PML-N meeting would be held to decide future course of action after the return of Nawaz Sharif from London.

PML-N pulled out its nine ministers from the federal cabinet in May over non-reinstatement of the judges sacked by President Pervez Musharraf in November last year under emergency rule.

Despite being a part of the ruling coalition the PML-N party has been fully backing the lawyers' movement for the restoration of judges. It participated in a long march to Islamabad last month.

The bar associations plan to organise another march soon and a date is likely to be fixed at a national convention of lawyers to be held in Lahore next week. The PML-N has said it would extend support to the planned new protest march.

In addition to the judges' row, the PPP-led government is facing erosion of public backing because of high inflation, with food inflation ballooning to a record 32 per cent, the highest not only in the country but also in the region.

Nawaz Sharif and PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who is currently in Dubai, are expected to meet on their return home.
