Islamabad: At least six people died as heavy monsoon rains lashed Pakistan's northwestern region and other parts of the country on Saturday.

Most of the fatalities occurred in Kohat area of the North West Frontier Province as flood waters swept away a dozen houses and the roofs of a number of dwellings collapsed.

According to the meteorological department, a trough of westerly wave was moving across northern parts of the country while a strong monsoon current from the Arabian Sea was reaching Punjab and Kashmir.

Lahore, the capital of Punjab, received its first heavy downpour of the monsoon season early on Saturday, inundating low lying areas.
