Islamabad: A Pakistani military spokesman says an army helicopter has rescued a frostbitten Italian climber from K-2's base camp after he survived an avalanche that took the lives of several mountaineers.

Spokesman Major Farooq Feroz says Marco Confortola and three members of his support team were taken from K-2's base camp and were on their way to a nearby town on Wednesday.

The rescue comes five days after Confortola became stranded on the world's second-highest mountain by an avalanche of falling ice that blocked his descent.

Eleven mountaineers died in the avalanche or from exposure. They include three South Koreans, two Nepalis, two Pakistanis and mountaineers from France, Ireland, Serbia and Norway.
