Manila: Management at the hotel that elections lawyer Alioden Dalaig visited moments before he was killed on Saturday has refused to turn over vital security video footage that could identify his assailant to police.
Chief Inspector Alejandro Yanquiling, homicide division chief of Manila police, said the management at the Hyatt Hotel in the tourist district of Malate, were refusing to turn over closed circuit television (CCTV) footage taken moments before Dalaig was slain by a gunman.
Dalaig, head of the legal department of the Commission on Elections, was killed moments after he emerged from a casino run by the state-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation. The killing remains a mystery.
As a Comelec official, Dalaig is involved in several high profile cases involving politicians.
Yanquiling said hotel security video footage could provide leads into the identity of Dalaig's assailant.
"The video footage is crucial in this case because it could provide leads that could identify the assailant," the police official said.
Police have ruled out robbery as the motive.
"The fact 300,000 pesos (Dh25,552) in cash was found in his possession at the time of the assassination dismisses the likelihood of robbery," said Yanquiling.
He surmised that amount of money, large even by local standards, could have been given to Dalaig moments before he was killed.
