Manila: A mayor was killed following an ambush by five armed men, while a congresswoman survived a bomb attack, which injured her three children and four others, in northern Luzon on Tuesday, a belated police report said yesterday.
Mayor Celso Rafael of Mountain Province was driving his car when five gunmen fired at him in Talitud village, Paracelis town, Mountain Province.
He died on the spot. Communist New People's Army (NPA) had abducted Rafael, but later freed him, in the '80s.
The NPA had accused Rafael of being a political "warlord".
Congresswoman Cecilia Luna was brought to a safe place yesterday after surviving an explosion that hit her family's compound in Dangdangla village, Bangued, Abra, at 7pm on Tuesday. Her children, Jendricks Luna, 36, mayor of Lagayan town; Cromuel Luna, 35; and Ryan Luna, 30, were hurt in the blast.
