Manila: An anti-graft court has upheld the 50-year jail conviction of Jose Marquez, a comedian turned mayor of Paranaque, in a broomsticks purchase scandal.

Marquez was convicted of manipulating the prices of broomsticks that he bought for the local government unit from 1996 and 1997.

Irregularities were found in the purchase of 55,432 broomsticks worth P2.94 million (Dh267,272).

Marquez claimed he was not given an opportunity to present evidence to prove that his signature was forged.
