Manila: The Philippine government Ombudsman has filed four criminal charges, including graft and robbery, against President Gloria Arroyo's close ally and former justice secretary.
Hernando Perez, his wife and two associates were charged yesterday before an anti-graft court for allegedly extorting $2 million (Dh7.35 million) from former Representative Mark Jimenez while Perez was justice secretary.
Perez and his wife have asked the Supreme Court for a restraining order and a reversal of the findings, alleging they were based on "prejudicial and inadmissible hearsays". The Office of the Ombudsman, a government anti-graft body, also charged Perez with violating public officials' code of conduct and falsifying documents.
