Manila: A Philippine hospital on Friday  recommended penalties and possible dismissal against three doctors and a nurse over a controversial rectal surgery that was posted on a video-sharing website.

Dr Roque Anthony Paradela, officer-in-charge of the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Centre in Cebu City, said the hospital is recommending the fine for posting on YouTube the video of a man being operated on the rectum because of a body spray container stuck inside.

The hospital however gave light penalties to the medical students present during the procedure. The video was taken by one of them.

It recommended that the medical school where the students were enrolled take disciplinary action. Paradela did not name the staff involved, but said one clinical instructor was banned by the hospital for misbehaviour.

The hospital submitted the recommendations to the Department of Health (DoH) who vowed to proceed against the employees found guilty of violating the patient's right to privacy.

The 39-year-old male patient complained that his rights were violated when the video found its way to YouTube.

The clip showed members of the medical team recording the surgery on mobile phones and giggling while doctors removed the container from the patient's rectum in January.

One of them even shouted "baby out!" when the surgeon removed the foreign object from the patient's body.
