Manila: The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) is amending its code of ethics after a rectal surgery scandal in a central Philippines hospital was posted on YouTube.
Rey Santos, incoming PMA president, said the amended code of ethics is expected to be approved when physicians come for their general assembly next month.
Admitting that doctors' image have been "tainted" lately because of the "unfortunate event" in Cebu City where a rectal surgery of a male patient was posted on YouTube, Santos noted the importance of strengthening the ethical guidelines for physicians.
Unethical behaviour
Santos said the behaviour of the medical team who operated on a 39-year-old patient with a body spray canister stuck in his rectum was "highly unethical".
"It should not be tolerated," he said adding that the surgeon who performed the procedure was "in-charge" of what was happening inside the operating room.
Santos noted that the giggling among medical staff that was shown on the video was "not a usual attitude".
The incident sparked into a scandal as videos of the operation showed one of the staff holding the body spray and aiming it on those inside the operating room while mobile phones take shots of the surgery.
Santos said while the patient's case was "unusual, it's not an excuse" for the medical team to behave unprofessionally.
