Manila:  The Philippine National Police (PNP) has called on staff to smile more as a way of inspiring confidence in members of the public, a senior official said.

Leopoldo Bataoil, the head of the PNP's Directorate for Police Community Relations, said an advisory called "Guidelines in Rendering Police Service" had been issued to police units to strengthen the campaign.

Giving details, Bataoil said: "Policemen should smile more and be courteous to the public. They should address others with respect and cordiality. We want to encourage policemen to be community-friendly, whether they deal with the public on the streets or in police stations."

"If Filipino policemen are friendlier, the people will cooperate with them. Policemen who do not follow the campaign will be suspended and face action," Bataoil warned.

On the impetus for the campaign, he said, "We have been receiving complaints that policemen are brusque and tough when dealing with the people."

The PNP has been trying to transform its image following allegations that active and retired members are involved in political killings, kidnapping, and extortion.
