Manila: Three people were killed, five others injured and more than 1,000 people displaced by a flash flood in the southern Philippines and a tornado in northern Luzon, officials of the National Disaster Coordinating Council said yesterday.
Three people died as raging winds and flash floods raised the level of a river in Bansalan town in Davao del Sur province in Mindanao.
One of the fatalities died by drowning at the Mirac River, a tiny islet in Davao del Sur, which flooded two villages, resulting in the evacuation of 169 families or 1,000 people to the municipal gymnasium of Bansalan.
Five residents, majority of them were children, were injured as displaced residents scampered to safer places in the south.
The squall, followed by a heavy downpour destroyed 100 houses in the two southern villages which are located at the foot Mount Apo, the Philippines' tallest mountain.
"Chaos among riverside residents began when the water level of the tiny river suddenly rose several metres," said Mayor Edwin Reyes of Bansalan.
