Manila: An anti-coal group pitched camp beside the proposed site of a power plant in central Philippines on Friday to express their opposition to the use of such fossil fuel.

A statement issued by Greenpeace Southeast Asia said their group had set up a "Climate Defenders Camp" opposite of a proposed coal-fired power plant in the village of Ingore, Iloilo City.

"Greenpeace has set up a camp in the coal plant site to step up the public opposition to the proposed coal plant. The camp is meant to be a hub for local communities and groups who are against the plant," Greenpeace said.

" The camp serves as a centre for their public awareness campaigns about the ill effects of coal-fired power plants, climate change and its dangerous impacts, and solutions such as renewable energy," the group said.

Sea blockade

Last month, the same group had put up a sea blockade near a coal-fired plant owned by Mirant off the coast of Batangas south of Manila.

The blockade, which was put up by the Greenpeace flagship "Rainbow Warrior" tried to prevent a sea vessel from off loading its cargo of coal, but authorities intervened causing the protesters to lift the picket.

Since yesterday, Greenpeace activists who are staying in the camp have been transmitting messages and images of the protest to a global audience to seek support. The activists had been joined by local volunteers, representatives from Responsible Ilonggos for Sustainable Energy.

The Rainbow Warrior is currently in the Philippines for its "Quit Coal - Save the Climate" ship tour. The Rainbow Warrior is anchored near the camp.
