Manila: President Gloria Arroyo has urged stake holders to take an active part in cleaning up the Laguna Lake in Metro Manila, as she stressed the water body's importance to the area and surrounding provinces.

"Only by working together can we restore the lake to its status as a source of life and livelihood," she said.

In recent decades, the water quality of the lake had continuously deteriorated due to several factors, among which is pollution from the continued dumping of wastewater by industries and commercial establishments in and around it as well as the unregulated presence of fish pens and fish cages.
