Manila: A thief who smeared chilli paste on his victim's face before robbing him was recently caught by people in Koronadal city.
The enraged residents meted out an equally agonising punishment - they suspended the thief by the belt loop of his trousers from a flagpole. His ordeal lasted several minutes.
According to a report by the Bombo radio station in Koronadal City in southern Philippines, Adil Maliba flagged down a motorcycle taxi that Elves Paredes was riding near the Marbel Elementary School on Saturday.
Potent sting
Maliba smeared a chilli paste on the face of an unsuspecting Paredes, forcing him to stop the vehicle.
Crushed chilli has the same effect of a pepper spray on anyone who gets in contact with it.
As the shocked motorcyclist was trying to clear his eyes of the stinging gunk, Maliba commandeered the vehicle and tried to escape with it.
Maliba nearly got away with his caper had it not been for Paredes' frantic screaming which caught the attention of bystanders who surrounded the thief.
Charged
The people pounced upon the thief and took him to the village hall where they decided to teach him a lesson.
They tied his hands with his belt and suspended him by the belt loop of his trousers on top of a flagpole.
After several minutes, Maliba was taken down from the pole and turned over to local officials.
Maliba will be charged with motorcycle theft.
