Manila: Local lawmakers are pushing for the tax-free importation of vehicles running on compressed natural gas as a measure to bring down the local demand for imported oil products.
Speaker Prospero Nograles and Agusan del Sur Rep Rodolfo Plaza are advocating a measure that would exempt individuals and corporations from paying duties and taxes on the importation of hybrid vehicles and those that run on compressed natural gas.
"Since we cannot swim head-on against the waves of price increases, it is best to lessen our dependence on imported fuel while increasing the use of alternative energy for development," Plaza said, adding the move will complement present government efforts in this direction.
