Manila: An American soldier accused of raping a Filipina in Okinawa, Japan has been charged and will be tried by a US military court, Manila's foreign affairs department announced in a statement on Friday.
"On July 28, the United States Army charged Specialist Ronald Edward Hopstock Jr. with the rape of a Filipino woman under section 120 of the US Uniform Code of Military Justice," the foreign affairs department said in a statement released to reporters.
The US Army also charged Specialist Hopstock with additional offences unrelated to the Filipina victim, said the statement, adding these were uncovered during the investigation of Hopstock. Details were not given.
The unnamed victim said that Hopstock had sexually assaulted her in a hotel on February 18 this year. Sulpicio Confiado, the Philippine consul general in Okinawa, was the source of the foreign affairs' statement.
