Manila: The Philippine Supreme Court on Monday temporarily blocked the signing of an agreement between the government and rebels from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
The deal was meant to expand an autonomous Muslim region in southern Philippines. The deal was supposed to be signed on Tuesday in Malaysia.
Court spokesman Midas Marquez said that the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order after Christian politicians from a southern province objected to the deal.
The rebel vice chairman, Ghazali Jaafar, refused to comment on the court's decision.
Presidential spokesman Jesus Dureza said it was "a good opportunity for some issues to be threshed out."
