Manila: Authorities in Laguna south of Manila arrested a middle-aged woman recently for planting a prohibited weed in her front yard garden.
Mercy Maulawin, 50, will be charged with violating the country's law prohibiting the cultivation of marijuana after police found and seized eight fully grown plants on Thursday in her garden, reports said.
Authorities arrested Maulawin after concerned individuals tipped the police off about the unusual plants that she was growing in her garden.
Some the tipsters recognised the "ornamental" plants being grown by the woman in her garden in the village of Gonzalez in the town of Pakil as the prohibited weed.
When questioned by police, Maulawin said she had no idea that the plant she was growing in her garden was marijuana. According to her, a certain Joshua Palero at Meynard Velasco had given her the seeds and she planted it in her garden because she liked how the plant looked.
There had been several instances in the past where apparent drug cultivators would use innocent-looking older women as front for carrying out their misdeeds. Last year, an old woman in La Trinidad town in Benguet province was arrested by authorities for planting opium poppies.
